Systems Engineer Lead (MBSE – Aerospace / ISR / C5ISR Programs)

Lead Advanced Defense Systems Architecture & Digital Engineering

Lead the design and architecture of mission-critical ISR and C5ISR systems shaping real-world national security operations.

Cambridge Automation is seeking a Systems Engineer Lead (MBSE) to drive system architecture, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), and digital engineering transformation across advanced aerospace and defense programs supporting the United States Army, United States Navy, and United States Marine Corps.

This is not a support role, this is technical leadership with ownership of system architecture, engineering strategy, and mission-critical outcomes.

You’ll operate at the intersection of:

• Advanced aerospace and defense technologies

• System architecture and digital engineering (MBSE)

• Mission execution and operational capability

What You’ll Do

Systems Engineering Leadership

• Lead full lifecycle systems engineering (requirements → architecture → integration → validation → deployment)

• Serve as the technical authority for system architecture, design decisions, and trade studies

• Establish and enforce MBSE standards, processes, and best practices

• Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary teams (software, hardware, cyber, test, operations)

MBSE & Digital Engineering

• Lead implementation of MBSE using SysML and industry-standard tools (Cameo, MagicDraw, etc.)

• Drive transition from document-based engineering to model-based digital engineering environments

• Develop and maintain system models ensuring full requirements traceability

• Support development of digital thread and digital twin capabilities

• Align engineering practices with the DoD Digital Engineering Strategy (DES)

Architecture & Requirements Development

• Lead requirements elicitation, decomposition, allocation, and traceability

• Develop system architectures, CONOPS, interface definitions, and engineering models

• Ensure alignment between mission requirements and system design

• Maintain configuration control and system baselines

Integration, Test & Validation

• Oversee integration across hardware, software, sensors, and networks

• Define and execute verification and validation (V&V) strategies

• Lead system-level testing, evaluation, and performance validation

• Ensure systems meet operational, performance, and reliability requirements

Design Reviews & Technical Governance

• Lead major engineering reviews:

• System Requirements Review (SRR)

• Preliminary Design Review (PDR)

• Critical Design Review (CDR)

• Present technical solutions to Government stakeholders and senior leadership

• Ensure engineering rigor, compliance, and quality across all deliverables

Customer & Stakeholder Engagement

• Serve as primary engineering interface with Government PMs, engineers, and technical authorities

• Lead Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs) and engineering briefings

• Translate mission needs into scalable engineering solutions

• Provide subject matter expertise in MBSE and system architecture

Technical Risk & Decision Support

• Identify, assess, and mitigate system-level risks and technical challenges

• Lead trade studies and engineering analyses to support decision-making

• Ensure compliance with program requirements, standards, and regulatory frameworks

Team Leadership

• Lead and mentor systems engineering teams

• Support hiring, workforce planning, and technical development

• Build high-performance engineering teams focused on execution and innovation

Strategic Engineering & Growth

• Support capture, proposal development, and solution architecture

• Drive innovation in MBSE, digital engineering, and system integration

• Provide lessons learned and continuous improvement recommendations

Mission & Systems You’ll Support

• ISR processing, exploitation, and dissemination systems

• Sensor integration (EO/IR, RF, SIGINT, radar)

• Tactical networks and mission command platforms

• Autonomous and AI-enabled systems

• Multi-domain operations across Army, Navy, and Marine Corps environments

What You Bring

• Active TS/SCI clearance (Polygraph preferred or ability to obtain)

• 10+ years of Systems Engineering experience in DoD or aerospace programs

• 3–5+ years of hands-on MBSE experience (SysML-based tools)

• Experience supporting ISR, C5ISR, aerospace, or mission systems

• Strong experience with system architecture, requirements, and integration

• Experience interfacing with Government stakeholders

• Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering, or related field

Preferred

• Master’s degree

• INCOSE CSEP or ESEP certification

• Experience with Digital Engineering / Digital Thread environments

• Familiarity with DoDAF, UAF, or enterprise architecture frameworks

• Experience supporting autonomous systems, AI/ML, or advanced ISR platforms

• Experience in classified or high-security environments

Tools & Technologies

• Cameo Systems Modeler / MagicDraw (SysML)

• IBM DOORS / DOORS Next

• Rhapsody (or equivalent MBSE tools)

• MATLAB / Simulink

• Teamcenter / Windchill (PLM)

• Jira / Confluence / Git-based environments

• Modeling & simulation tools (STK, AFSIM, etc.)
